PURPOSE OF RETREAT
Vajrayana Buddhism, the "Diamond Path," offers many deity practices, such as those related to Chenrezig, in which the deity mirrors to us our natural enlightened mind. As our practice brings us into ever closer relationship with the deity, delusion and obscuration are revealed as illusory, and the energies of deluded mind transform into their natural enlightened qualities.
Chenrezig is renowned as the embodiment of the compassion of all the Buddhas, and is known by many different names, including Avalokiteshvara in India, Kuan-yin in China, and Kannon in Japan. It is said that all the teachings of the Buddha are contained in Chenrezig’s mantra, OM MANI PADME HUNG HRI, and it carries with it the power to purify our mind’s obscurations. We develop the enlightened quality of compassion through Chenrezig practice and mantra recitation as well as by compassionate conduct toward all beings. By continuously chanting Chenrezig’s mantra intensively, practitioners acquire a vast amount of merit, which is then dedicated toward the enlightenment of all beings.
This retreat focuses solely on the recitation of the mantra OM MANI PADME HUNG. Verbal recitation is encouraged so as to develop within the individual the deepest qualities of mindfulness, compassion, and peace, through the blessings of Avalokiteshvara ( Guanyin ) and a pure mind. By reciting millions of Mani, all the myriad living organisms in your body will be blessed by Avalokiteshvara ( Guanyin ), and when you die even the smoke from the cremation of your corpse will have the power to protect whoever inhales it from rebirth in the lower realms." — Karandaryuha Sutra.
A Buddha capable of extraordinary feats beyond the capacity of any other being, such as stating exactly how many drops of rain would fall during a rainstorm lasting twelve years, would not be able to fully describe the merit generated by a single recitation of the Mani.
The merit accumulated will be dedicated to World Peace, well-being of all nations, end of calamities and epidemic, prosperity and good health.
Audience: I have been always reciting the prayer OM MANI PADME HUNG, but without actually knowing what it means. What is the meaning of OM MANI PADME HUNG?
His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama: Prayers and also the recitation of mantras, just simply repeating the sound, does not help much. Particularly, OM MANI PADME HUNG is a Buddhist mantra and the whole Buddhist system is to utilize human intelligence in a maximum way, through that way, to transform our emotions. That is the Buddhist approach. Other traditions, most of the theistic religions approach mainly through faith, through prayers to God/creator. They are also immensely powerful, wonderful thing. In fact, all religions/traditions carry the same message, same practice, that is, the practice of love and compassion, forgiveness, tolerance, self-discipline. It is the same. Most of the theistic religions regard prayers as the most important part, but for Buddhists, Buddha stated, “You are your own master. Your future depends entirely on yourself”. So in Buddhism, Buddha taught, “Study is very very important. Knowledge is very important in order to utilize human intelligence fully." We have to know how to use, and in order to utilize, you must know the mental system and so on. So you pay more attention to study, to understand what the Buddhist system is. Then with the understanding of the whole system and transformation of our mind; with that clarity, full of knowledge, and with ultimate aim and sincere motivation; with all these, then reciting this mantra is very helpful.
OM MANI PADME HUNG mantra has six syllables: OM-MA-NI-PAD-ME-HUNG. OM has three letters (A-U-M) that represent our body, speech and mind. There are two levels – impure and pure. Body, speech and mind on the impure level are the basis of suffering. Therefore, the experience of pain and pleasure mainly from body and mind on the impure level can be transformed into the pure, ever-pleasant body and mind, and automatically speech also. OM represents the impure part and the pure part. The question is how to transform three impure (body speech and mind) into three pure (body, speech and mind)? Then come MANI and PADME. MANI means jewel symbolizing altruism, infinite altruism. PADME means lotus symbolizing wisdom. The combination of altruism and wisdom is represented by HUNG. HUNG carries the meaning combination. The proper way/method to purify/transform from the three impure (body, speech and mind) to the three pure (body, speech and mind) is through the combination of altruism and wisdom.
